05 Sponsoring versus Fundraising

Fundraising General term for raising funds for an organisation or a project Fundraising comprises private donations, contributions from foundations, donations in kind from firms etc. These contributions are not generally linked to a contribution in return.
Sponsoring: Part of fundraising:The sponsor makes a contribution (money, services, donations in kind, etc.) in return for a service (such as placement of logo or product, mentioning a name, etc.)

Attention:

⇒ Networking and staying flexible
Fundrasing comprises many different forms of support. You might ask someone for money and get, after a negative answer, an interesting personal contact as mentor or patron (cf. keywork ambassadors) for future projects.

⇒ Too many possible sponsors
Concentrate on one single area and comb through it carefully rather than superficially going through many areas.

Sources and possibilities of fundraising

Sponsoring partners Contributions of firms (money or other)
Firms Apart from the well-known sponsoring in favour of sport and culture, their support is a type of social sponsoring. Using this term will help the firms to categorise the project better.
Institutional partners Contributions of institutions (money or other)
Government Governmental bodies generally can be approached on three levels and often have similar support programmes on all levels: national, cantonal, local. Important: look for a specific fund.
Private foundations This area is the least transparent. There are countless foundations. A prerequisite for receiving their money is precisely meeting the mission of the foundation. Link to the federal list of foundations http://www.edi.admin.ch (in German)
Church Ask for support on different levels, depending on the denomination: national, regional (e.g. diocese), districts or local (parishes, communities).
Philanthropists Wealthy people often donate money. The Rotary Club and the Lions Club are nationally renowned clubs with local chapters.
Combined forms Other contributions may also be part of an agreement, not only money donations. Most agreements contain a combination of monetary funds and following contributions:
Services and infrastructure such as: transport, food (catering), lodging, distribution of merchandising products, rooms.
Donations in kind such as: technical appliances, tools, vehicles - and much more!
Media partnerships such as an advertisement page: you convice the advertisers and the newspaper to design a thematic page.
